Hey people of the internet.

Just a couple of minutes ago, =dwuff informed me that my most recent sketch (which happens to be fan art :/ ) has ended up on Reddit. [link]

Some of you know this one:

Since it also ended up on Mr. Edmund McMillen's tumblr [link] (Edmund, you rock hard good sir), it's rapidly gaining lots of online attention...

Which is great, I mean, fuck yeah!
...but it may also be very bad.

After seeing this link [link] in the thread, it may be possible that someone is gearing up to sell it as merchandise.

I know I shouldn't really sound upset since... well... I don't own the rights to either Super Meat Boy nor Scott Pilgrim, but because the art still belongs to me in a sense, it's complicating things quite a bit.  We all know how terrible art thievery is, how it feels when another individual takes the credit for the hours you spent on YOUR work and to top that off, is profitting from this.

I placed a watermark on the image now, but I fear that it may already be too late.  So if any of you are registered to Reddit (I know I'm not, not planning to either), please link back here or give the appropriate credit.

I know it may sound a little dumb, bitching about a piece of fanart, maybe I'm just being paranoid... but you would feel the same, right?  Help a fellow creative out, please?

Keep it metal!

And for the record, Edmund, you are an inspiration.

Regards

~ Ben

Congrats to you then, Mr Beard ;) You really deserved it and that picture is just awesome:D I also really hope that they won't just rip your art and sell merchandise of it. Even if you do not own Meatboy and Scott Pilgrim, you did the artwork they want to sell....I really hope that the watermark will help and that it is not too late.

On one hand, I'm glad it's getting noticed. I was contacted by a gallery in New York and they want me to participate in themed exhibitions, starting in May. This was after they spotted this piece in particular.

Seems like the only way to make it these days is to do fan art.

I hope they won't sell it, it's still your art even if it's fan art, you put the hard work in it. Congrats on getting so much attention, you really deserve it :)

Thanks :D

It doesn't look like anyone's tried to sell it so far.

Can you really stop others from using it at this point? Probably not, however I think there is an opportunity here for the long term here. You have to make sure that people know you made this piece of work (and you are). If this image does take off and you name is firmly on it as the creative behind it, it could potentially open other doors that you could capitalize on later. Hell I would actively work with the people/companies that are trying to sell/steal your work. You can't beat or stop them, so you can just as well use them to further your career and outcome for what you want.

As I said on FB, but reposting here to make sure you get it, there's a link in the sidebar to contact the subreddit moderators, best you can do is speak to them

 I sent them an email thing, signing it from both of us as an "admin team." :P Hopefully this won't get out of hand. If it does get pirated for merch I'm sure we can ask Edmund to do something, as it would be his work being sold without consent.
